Mr Vasilis VALAVANIS has an environmental biology background, he is specialised in the field of Geographical Information Science (GIS?) and Remote Sensing (RS) as these are applied in the disciplines of Fishery Science and Oceanography. Since 1997, he is a research scientist at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Crete Branch) carrying out research through EU-funded research projects dealing with the use of GIS and RS technologies to the investigation of species-environment interactions, essential fish habitat? mapping, ocean processes mapping, etc. V. Valavanis has produced more than 35 scientific publications in the peer-reviewed literature and a number of special issues and articles in peer-reviewed scientific conferences, invited talks and seminar organisation in leading scientific symposiums in the field as well as leading participation as scientific responsible and coordination of more than 15 scientific research projects since 1996. He is the author of “Geographic Information Systems in Oceanography and Fisheries”, published by Taylor & Francis in May 2002) and the author of numerous book chapters. He is the Editor of “Essential Fish Habitats Mapping in the Mediterranean”, published by Springer in October 2008. Most recently, he co-edited “Marine Ecosystems and Sustainability”, published by Springer in July 2011.
