Vasilis Gerovasileiou has a B.Sc. in Marine Sciences and a M.Sc. in Integrated Coastal Management from the University of the Aegean, Greece. At present he is a research assistant and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Zoology, School of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. His Ph.D. focuses on the study of the diversity and structure of marine cave communities in the Aegean Sea. His research interests are related to the taxonomy, ecology, and biogeography of sessile invertebrates with special emphasis on sponges, anthozoans and their associated macrofauna. He has 5 publications in peer reviewed journals and 36 in proceedings of scientific conferences and workshops. He has participated as a member of the research team in National and European funded research projects in collaboration with the University of the Aegean, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, and private consulting companies specializing in the fields of fisheries and marine environment. He is a certified divemaster (PADI) and a scientific diver, experienced in underwater sampling, photography and visual census techniques.
