MEDISEH compiled historical and extent data to be rendered through GIS? tools on the 3 main protected habitats under Council Regulation (EC) n° 1967/2006: seagrass beds, coralligenous habitats and mäerl beds.
Data indicate the ubiquitous presence of coralligenous formations in Greece (Mesophyllum spp., Lithophyllum spp., Peyssonnellia spp. + various uncalcified algae and, depending on local conditions, sponges, scleractinians, bryozoa, gorgonians.
In the Eastern Basin, some of the most remarkable coralligenous communities are to be found in much deeper waters than their Western Mediterranean counterparts.
Both spatial and vertical distribution remain largely unknown in the wider Eastern Mediterranean basin. Biodiversity studies are very few and geographically restricted. Connectivity issues have not as yet been addressed -> difficulty in identifying / prioritizing the most vulnerable/ecologically important areas.
